Press Release

Date: Feb. 21, 2015
Location: Trenton, NJ

Acting Governor Kim Guadagno today addressed the 35th Annual Marion Thompson Wright Lecture Series, "Curating Black America," at Rutgers University-Newark in memory of the event's co-founder, the late Dr. Clement Alexander Price.

In addition to the annual lecture series, the Institute on Ethnicity and the Chancellor's Office of Rutgers University-Newark hosted a special tribute to Dr. Price's life and work, with speakers participating in a moderated discussion about his contributions in the fields of public history, African American history and the public humanities.

"Dr. Clement Price believed that, if you want things to change, you have to lead that change and live that change," said Acting Governor Guadagno, adding that, to have lasting change, everyone needs a seat at the table. "The nation will never forget Dr. Price's dedication to promoting and fostering excellence in scholarship, creativity and multicultural understanding. Working together, we will continue to honor the spirit and live the incredible legacy of leaders like Dr. Price, Dr. Thompson Wright, Dr. King and all those who have gone before us and shaped our vision for a united world."

The Acting Governor also helped present the first Dr. Price essay awards to five Newark Elementary School students.

The annual lecture series was named for East Orange native Dr. Marion Thompson Wright (1902-1962), a pioneer in African American historiography and race relations in New Jersey who was the first professionally trained woman historian in the United States. It is sponsored by the Rutgers Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience, the Federated Department of History, Rutgers University-Newark, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
